Outdoor Living Trends and Ideas

This year’s outdoor living trends are all about bringing the indoors out! Turn your backyard into an inviting oasis while still maintaining the comfort and ease that you enjoy inside your home. Outdoor living spaces are becoming an extension of the home, taking into consideration the design and style of the home to create a cohesive and seamless feel.

Incorporating Nature:
One design element that has become prevalent in outdoor living is incorporating natural elements to create a peaceful atmosphere that celebrates nature.  Incorporating potted plants and growing vines on trellises adds color and interest to your outdoor space to create a serene environment. Creating a raised bed garden is a great way to make your outdoor living space inviting and allows you to grow healthy food for family and guests.

Outdoor Kitchens:
Another popular trend is outdoor kitchens. Homeowners want to have the option to cook and entertain outside. Options range from simple grill stations with prep area to full outdoor kitchens complete with cooktops, wine fridge, seating area, and more. The options are limitless and can be scaled to accommodate all budgets. Adding a dining room set from Lane Venture allows you to bring the dining experience outdoors.

Fire Pits:
The quintessential picture of outdoor living involves gathering with your guests around a warm fire. An outdoor fire pit provides heat and ambiance for cozy evenings outdoors. Fire pits are a trend that is here to stay and enjoying them has never been easier! Incorporate easy to maintain pieces like the Sun Villa River House Fire Pit paired with cushioned chairs and escape to your own Savannah-inspired night by the river.

Furniture of Dalton is here to help bring your outdoor living design vision to life with our expansive and beautiful outdoor furniture selection. Call or stop in today to get started creating the outdoor living oasis of your dreams.

Mixing Materials:
Incorporating a variety of materials in an outdoor space can be fashionable and functional. Mixing metals, rattens, and sun and water resistant cushions in a space adds warmth and color while also making the outdoor living furniture durable and long-lasting. Outdoor rugs are a great way to bring it all together while adding a cozy touch and protecting the flooring on your deck or patio. In a smaller space, bringing in simple and functional pieces like a medal swivel lounge chair paired with a wooden end table is a great way to mix materials and create a relaxing area to wind down and get lost in a good book.

When choosing furniture for outdoor spaces, it is important to pay attention to the quality, durability, performance, and integrity. Furniture of Dalton has a wide selection of high quality products for all budgets. Adding dining tables, chairs, sectionals, rockers, and fire pits will get your outdoor space ready to entertain friends and family and extend the gathering from inside to outdoors! 1. Comfort

The most important thing when deciding to purchase a piece of patio furniture is comfort! It doesn't matter how cute, cool, or custom a piece is if it feels like you are sitting on a boulder, you are never going to use it!

So unless your main goal is to sit inside your home and simply admire your patio set from indoors, comfort should be your first priority.

This depends on the material you select, wood or cushion? Metal or wicker? Before you make this choice though, consider the rest of the tips we advise all buyers to take into consideration.

Durability may steer you away from cushions, but color and quality may lead you somewhere else.

Weigh the pros and cons, keep reading, and we believe a decision will come to you.

2. Durability

Durability is key, not only do you want your outdoor furniture to last, but you also don't really want to have to put a ton of work into its upkeep.

Whether your furniture is up against pets, kids, or summer BBQ's, it is important to find a set that will last, but that is low maintenance enough that you don't feel like you need to borrow some plastic from your grandmother's couch to protect it.

3. Color

Ah, color. This is mostly aesthetic, but also important because you will have to look at your outdoor furniture for almost 3/4 of the year.

You need to be proud to show off your outdoor summer style at every BBQ, Birthday Party, and Bonfire you host this year.

So don't rush to a decision and decide to make it work. Your perfect pieces are out there, and we are here to help you find them!

4. Quality

The quality of your furniture is also very important.

Quality pieces do typically come with a higher price tag, but the expense will easily pay itself off when you realize you don't have to replace your beloved patio set every year.

5. Storage

This factor isn't important to everyone, but it should be. Think you don't need extra storage on your porch or patio, think again.

With kids playing and pets running around, there is going to be toys everywhere, keep yourself organized and your sanity in check with the essentials always within reach.

Try side tables with drawers, an ottoman with a secret compartment, or under couch space. You'll thank us later.

Now that you know what you should be looking for in your patio furniture, it is time to pick the pieces!

Couches, Tables, and Chairs, Oh My!

Find the seat you need, with selections from lounge chairs, cushioned sofas, sectionals, Adirondacks, old-fashioned rockers, dining sets, and lawn chairs.

Front Porch Chairs

OTTOMANS

10 Ways To Make The Perfect Patio

Tired of that boring concrete slab of a patio?

Want to make the patio on your city apartment feel like a jungle oasis?

It seems like patios are one of the most neglected aspects of our homes.

More times than not, we find a patio table and chairs on sale, set them up on the patio, and call it a day.

Our patios are capable of so much more.

You can turn that neglected patio into an inviting outdoor space without much effort.

With the dead of winter right around the corner, you'll want to be prepared for spring.

You'll be dying to spend some time outside once the temperature starts climbing.

Below is a list of 10 ideas that will have you ready for spring and wanting to spend all of your free time on your patio.

1. Turn Your Patio Green

You can't have too many plants and flowers on your balcony.

Especially if you're in an apartment in the city, a patio full of bright and colorful plants and flowers will be a welcome break from the concrete and exhaust.

The plants are easy on the eyes, and they'll help keep the air on your patio clean and fresh.

Nurture your plants, and they'll nurture you.

Patio design

2. Add a Pergola to Your Outdoor Space

Even the blandest and most boring concrete slab can turn into an instant eye catcher with a pergola.

You'll be able to add some shade during those hot summer afternoons as well.

With the pergola flush against the house at the roofline, a seamless connection is made that makes it look like it belongs there.

Add even more style to your patio with the columns that hold up the pergola and border the patio.

You can also hang some fabric shades from the pergola to add even more style and shade.

This may not be an option if you live in an apartment, but this is a must-do if you're a homeowner.

3. Use Patterns on Your Patio Floor

Using outdoor floor tiles will transform your patio.

The right patterns can make your tiny patio look big and beautiful.

You can take risks on your patio that you wouldn't usually take on the inside of your house.

The bigger the tile you use, the bigger it will make your patio appear.

You can also mix and match square and rectangle designs to add variety to your design.

Install your tiles in a diamond pattern instead of the typical square pattern to add an extra kick of style.

4. Add a Fire Pit to Your Backyard Patio

There are plenty of options available to add a firepit to your outdoor patio space.

Make sure you do this responsibly and don't install a fireplace in a spot that could catch anything else on fire.

If you live in an apartment, you will, unfortunately, have to skip this idea.

A fire pit is perfect for s'mores in the summertime and becomes a warm gathering spot during the cooler spring and fall months.

5. Get Creative with your Patio Seating

When it comes to seating, you need to get creative.

Even if you have limited space, don't let that limit your imagination.

Don't go to the big box store and buy the first boxed patio set you see.

You should keep things warm and comfy, not cold and dull.

Mix and match your styles, do things like putting wire seating with a wicker table.

Add some outdoor pillows along with an outdoor ottoman, and you're all set!

Patio furniture

6. Add a beverage station

This idea will make your patio a hit during outdoor get-togethers.

Both practical and stylish, a beverage station is a must-have for any patio.

If you're handy, you can build one from scratch.

Alternatively, you can re-purpose a workbench.

Re-purposing it won't take much work either. Just add some paint and a curtain to hide the supplies.

If you don't want to use it as a beverage station, use it to hold some extra plants and flowers, or for general storage.

7. Make Your Walls a Centerpiece

If you have a covered patio, there's no room for boring walls.

The best outdoor spaces utilize every inch available.

That includes your walls.

The options to turn your patio walls into masterpieces are endless.

One option is to cover them in fencing trellis.

Then hang flower boxes on the trellis to turn your patio into the jungle oasis you've dreamed of.

You can also switch out the flowers for herbs and have your herb or veggie garden.

There's nothing like cooking with veggies and herbs you've grown yourself.

Add in an outdoor daybed so you can relax in your masterpiece.

8. Add Swings

This one will be a hit with the kids.

There are several types of swings you can add to your patio.

If it's covered, you can hang a swing from the ceiling.

You can even consider a swing bed for those lazy summer evenings.

If you don't have a covered patio, you can add a canopy porch wing for shade and comfort.

Even with the best looking porch, no one will want to spend time on it if it's not comfortable.

Adding a swing will add the comfort you need.

If you have a family with a lot of kids, you can add a couple of kids saucer swings.

9. Get a Patio Fountain

Water is an excellent way to add ambiance to your porch.

A fountain is something everyone will notice and compliment.

There are plenty of options available to you depending on the space you have.

For smaller apartment patios, there are tabletop options.

A fountain on an apartment patio will also help drown out the unwanted noises that come with living in a city.

If you have plenty of space in your backyard, the sky is the limit with your fountain.

10. Sometimes less is more

Maybe you're a minimalist. Or perhaps you don't have space.

Either way, sometimes taking away is the best way to add value.

If you're worried about feeling cluttered, then you need to keep it simple.

Two folding chairs and a planter is all you need.

Add in a small side table to hold your drinks and snacks, and you're set.

Never underestimate the power of a perfectly placed chair.

Never too late to start

It might be nearing the end of the summer, but its never too late to show your patio some love.

Because who doesn't love fall parties on the patio?

Winter will be here before you know it, so why not make the most of our last months of warm weather and get your patio party-ready today?

Get started now and you'll be all set for patio season next year!

Seating

Conversation sets are all about gathering. Let your seating style reflect your space and aim.

Prefer individual seating? Choose a group of chairs centered around a sofa.

Want room to lounge? Opt for a roomy, all-in-one sectional.

SOFA CENTRIC

A sofa seating group consists of a couch that seats two to three, surrounded by individual chairs.

This option allows for shifting arrangements. Options can range from a 3 piece set to a group that will seat 8 or more.

Ottomans make luxurious footrests for a few, or extra seating for a crowd.

SECTIONAL FOCUS

A sectional seating group is made up of linked, modular pieces that join to form a single unit.

Sectionals are great for large spaces and provide ample lounging for small parties, or plenty of seating for the whole crew.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS

If the gathered group is the main appeal, choose a u-shaped sectional, or a sofa and chair set that will work in the round.

This draws the energy to the center of the group, and makes conversation the focal point.

If your outdoor space includes a great view, like a lush garden or water feature, choose seating to take advantage of the sights.

L-shaped sectionals give everyone the best view in the house.

Symmetrical seating adds a touch of formality, while asymmetrical arrangements are modern and quirky.

Style

When considering a conversation set, you may want to seek a certain style. Here’s a quick offering of options:

MODERN

Contemporary style conversation sets are often over sized and minimal.

They offer plenty of room for lounging, with streamlined, geometric style.

Common Frame Material: Steel or aluminum

Example: deep set, streamlined sectional

RUSTIC

This is a cozy, casual style that tends to be warm and welcoming. Cue images of a log cabin retreat, and look for natural materials, including timber, hide, and cotton duck.

Common Frame Material: Weathered wood

Example: Adirondack chair

BUNGALOW

This utilitarian style focuses on simple, sturdy forms. Like the Craftsman home it is designed to reflect, the furniture is well crafted and made to last.

Common Frame Material: Solid hardwood

Example: Oak rocking chair

COASTAL

A relaxed style, equally at home by the pool or the sea, this type is easy-breezy. Look for lightweight frames with white upholstery.

Common Frame Material: Resin coated wicker or rattan

Example: Chaise Lounge

RETRO

A contemporary style that reflects a vintage vibe, retro sets usually provide a pop of color and a splash of fun.

Look for mod, geometric shapes that add quirky personality to a space.

Common Frame Material: Powder coated metal

Example: Acapulco Chairs

Retro Patio Furniture

Material

Because Conversation Sets for the Patio are designed to live outside, make sure to choose materials that can hold up to the elements.

Start with a sturdy frame, and top with all weather cushions. Here are some of our favorite hardy materials:

WICKER / RATTAN

If you’re after the classic woven look, choose modern patio sets cast or coated in resin.

These are weather resistant and lightweight enough to lug around.

If you live in a high wind area, you may want to head for heavier options.

METAL

Metal is the longest lasting, most durable frame option around.

Aluminum is the lightest and requires the least maintenance of the metals.

Cast or wrought iron is a great stay-put option due to its heft, and steel makes for the strongest frame you can find.

Look for powder coated, UV resistant finishes that will keep seats cool in the sun while deterring rust. For high quality finds, seek seamless welds.

WOOD

For a warm, natural look go with wood framed furniture.

Denser woods like teak and eucalyptus resist water and have a long life span.

Cedar is a softer wood with a rosy glow, still known for its durability (see evidence of this in rural cedar fence posts).

Wooden furniture will require some maintenance, including occasional sealants or oil treatments.

Seek sturdy, mortise and tenon joints and avoid furniture held together with glue.

PLASTIC

This is often the cheapest choice, highly portable, but less durable than other options.

If you’re set on plastic, opt for marine grade polymer, made of High Density Polyethylene. HDPE will hold up to the elements, and is 100% recyclable.

CUSHIONS

The gold standard of outdoor fabrics is 100% solution dyed acrylic yarn, the foundation of top notch Sunbrella brand.

This material resists UV rays and water, staving off fading, staining, moisture and mildew.

Spun polyester with a UV coating is the next best option, quick to dry but less resistant to fading.

For comfy cushions that hold up over time, choose Dacron- a durable foam padding, wrapped in polyester.

This option keeps its spring better than polyester fill or foam alone.

What are the best outdoor furniture materials

We expect a lot from our furniture.

It needs to look nice, it needs to be comfortable, and it needs to be functional.

With outdoor furniture, we expect all of that and more.

We not only need it to be functional, comfortable, and stylish, but it needs to be able to hold up under extreme weather conditions.

If your outdoor furniture isn't designed to withstand the elements, you're just throwing your money away.

You also want something that's easy to clean, because you'll be cleaning them often.

In the article below, we list a wide range of the most popular outdoor furniture materials and their benefits so you can make an informed decision when it's time to buy new furniture.

Table Of Contents

  • Aluminum

  • Synthetic Wicker

  • Wood

  • Concrete

  • Recycled Plastic

  • Sunbrella

  • Steel

  • Wrought Iron

  • Choose Wisely

1. Aluminum

Aluminum is the most popular contemporary patio furniture material, and the competition really isn't close.

It resists rust and moisture damage better than most other materials, and a powder-coated finish offers additional protection against the elements.

Aluminum is lightweight but strong, making it dependable and easy to store and arrange.

Tubular aluminum is the most lightweight option, while wrought and cast aluminum are heavy enough to withstand the weather, but still light enough to easily rearrange and store.

-back to contents

2. Synthetic Wicker

Most outdoor wicker patio sets are made from synthetic wicker.

It's also called resin wicker and is made to look like natural wicker, and it is much more durable.

Natural wicker is made from plant materials and is a technique that has been utilized by cultures all over the world.

The ancient Egyptians even used it to make wicker baskets.

As beautiful as it is, natural wicker is easily damaged in the rain, sleet, snow, and moisture, making it a poor choice for outdoor furniture.

-back to contents

3. Wood

Not all woods are created equal, but if there is one thing they all have in common, it's the ageless appeal of it's natural beauty.

Pine, cedar, or fir are softer woods with some natural weather resistance, and hardwoods like shorea and teak are known for their exceptional durability and performance.

Wood will lend a warm and casual feel to any outdoor space, and can easily withstand rain, sunlight, humidity, wind, and extreme temperatures.

-back to contents

Outdoor wood furniture

4. Concrete

You read it right, concrete makes for great outdoor furniture.

No more warping, rotting, staining, sagging or splinters with concrete.

And it won't fall apart if you forget to bring it in for the winter.

Concrete will withstand the worst that mother nature (or you) can throw at it.

Not even hurricanes are a match for concrete furniture.

Concrete truly is the superhero of outdoor furniture.

It's one of the oldest, strongest, and most durable materials that humans have ever made, and if done right it can be very stylish as well.

Concrete furniture will bring style to your backyard, and you'll be able to enjoy it for generations.

-back to contents

5. Recycled Plastic

Recycled plastic furniture ranks at the top of the list for both style and performance.

Recycled plastic is much stronger than you'd think, and it is extremely durable.

It's resistant to moisture, rotting, and cracking, and it's impervious to saltwater and stains.

It also resists fading, because its color is intrinsic to the material.

And, best of all, recycled furniture can be made to resemble wood, but doesn't come with any of the extra maintenance that wood brings.

-back to contents

6. Sunbrella

Sunbrella is, by far, the best fabric for upholstered outdoor chairs and sofas.

The fabrics are available in various colors and patterns and are completely durable and fade-resistant.

Traditional dyeing processes only leave color on the surface of the fiber, so they fade fairly easily.

Sunbrella fibers are saturated to the core with UV-stable pigments, making them resistant to fading and the degrading effects of sunlight.

The fabric is also engineered to resist mold and mildew, so you aren't forced to clean them over and over again.

If you want an outdoor space that has the look, feel, and comfort of your living room, sunbrella is the way to go.

-back to contents

7. Steel

Heavier than aluminum, steel provides strength, stability, and endurance in extreme temperatures.

Powder-coated finishes aid in rust resistance.

Steel is typically used for framing high-end modern chairs and bistro-style seats and is often used for retro designs and zero-gravity loungers.

Its hefty weight provides a sturdy, long-lasting construction, and the classic look of steel lends a clean, sophisticated feel to your space.

-back to contents

8. Wrought Iron

Wrought iron is beloved for its distinctive appearance and wind-resistant sturdiness and strength.

It's heavier than aluminum, and in its natural state, it's more vulnerable to the elements.

However, most wrought iron furniture is specially treated with weather-resistant finishes that help seal out moisture and prevent rust.

Because of its heavy weight, you don't have to worry about it ending up in a neighbors yard after a storm, and it can withstand even the most direct sunlight without showing any damage.

-back to contents

Choose Wisely

Even more important than style and functionality for outdoor furniture is its durability.

The best looking patio table or the most functional lawn chair is worthless if it can't stand up to the elements.

Also, be mindful of the climate where you live.

Is the weather dry? Do you live in an area prone to hurricanes? Earthquakes? How harsh are your winters?

Those are all critical questions to ask yourself when you're picking out your outdoor furniture.

The list above gives you eight great outdoor furniture material options that can stand up to even the most extreme conditions.

How To Get Your Patio Ready For Winter

Posted on: November 1, 2019

Share this:

Summer is over, the leaves are starting to change colors, and the days of relaxing in the sun are behind you.

Now it's time to prepare for winter.

And in some parts of the country, that means preparing for harsh weather, bitter cold, deep snow, high winds, and runny noses.

You won't be able to use your patio the same way you did over the summer, but it's still important to do a few things to prepare your patio for the harsh winter months.

It won't take a lot of effort on your part to winterize your patio, and by doing so, you will protect your outdoor furniture as well as make the space usable during the winter months.

While the mere thought of spending time on your patio during the winter might be unbearable, there are actually plenty of ways you can enjoy your patio during the "off-season."

With just a little effort you can create a space that you can enjoy even after the winter weather arrives.

Continue reading to find out how.

Put Your Furniture Away

The first thing you want to do before it gets bitter cold outside is to remove all of your furniture and any other large items from your patio.

Put away all of your tables, chairs, backyard tools, and plants.

Give everything a quick rinse and let it dry in the sun before you put it away for the winter.

If you have an outdoor umbrella, take that down and give it an excellent wipedown to remove the dirt that accumulated over the summer.

Now, put everything neatly into garbage bags, and store them in your shed, garage, under a deck, or beneath a large tarp.

While the mere thought of spending time on your patio during the winter might be unbearable, there are actually plenty of ways you can enjoy your patio during the "off-season."

With just a little effort you can create a space that you can enjoy even after the winter weather arrives.

How to winterize your patio

Deep Clean The BBQ

After grilling all summer, your BBQ is definitely going to need a thorough cleaning.

Make sure you give it a good scrub before you put it away for the winter.

It's a dirty job, but it's one that is worth doing so you can get continued use from your BBQ.

Once the ground thaws and the leaves are back on the trees next year, you'll be able to pull your BBQ out and use it right away.

Use an oven cleaner to remove any stuck-on grease, and then use your water hose to rinse everything off.

If you have a gas grill, make sure everything is turned off, and the lines are disconnected. Store your propane in a safe area where it will stay dry and won't get too hot.

Clean Up

If your patio is surrounded by trees, sweep up any leaves and debris before they get trapped in the snow when winter comes.

Use a patio or driveway cleaning solution with a high powered nozzle to thoroughly wash the cement surface or bricks.

You'll need to make sure that your patio gets a fresh start so once you hear the birds chirping, it'll be nice and clean and ready to be arranged.

Get Seasonal Furniture

If you'd like to try to spend time on your patio during the winter, you should invest in weatherproof seating that can be arranged easily.

A popular option is a plastic bench made out of recycled materials.

Those benches are usually attractive, easy to lift and move, and can accommodate guests.

If you'd rather not invest any money in a new bench, just leave out a couple of your patio chairs and cover them in a heavy-duty, weather-resistant outdoor furniture cover.

Keep in mind that it gets dark earlier in the winter, so you might need to invest in additional outdoor lighting.

Another fun way to spend time on your patio during the winter is to gather around a fire pit. It will keep the family warm, and you'll create great memories roasting marshmallows and sharing stories.

You can also hang string lights around the patio to make it feel warm and inviting, even if the weather isn't.

Buy Patio Shades

We can't control the weather, but we can shield ourselves from the wind.

There will likely be plenty of times you'd like to spend time out on your patio during the winter, but the windchill keeps you inside on your couch instead.

That's where patio shades come in.

Floor to ceiling patio shades will shield you from the wind, reduce the windchill, and make it possible for you to enjoy your patio in the winter.

These shades will be an inexpensive addition that will make your space look beautiful and comfortable when you enjoy some time outside in the winter.

You can also keep them up in the springtime when the weather gets warmer.

You won't need protection from the wind, but it's a great way to get a little extra privacy in your outdoor space.

Enjoy Your Patio Year Round

If you want to enjoy your patio all year, and not just during the warmer months, there are only a few things you need to do to get it ready.

It's really just a matter of getting your furniture put away and getting everything cleaned up.

And, if you pay attention when you're buying your patio furniture, you'll notice that many companies make outdoor furniture that can withstand every season.

Hang a few string lights around your patio, install a fire pit, and you can create a cozy winter wonderland that will almost make you forget how miserable the weather is around you.

A little bit of money and a lot of creativity will go a long way toward making your patio usable year-round.

The Sunvilla Allegro set’s Mediterranean flair brings to mind ocean spray and good wine. While we all can’t be so lucky to live on the Italian coast, lounging by the pool with a glass of rosé is a bit more within reach! With such a lovely mental image in mind, it’s no surprise that this is one of the most popular conversation sets at Furniture of Dalton.

Simple yet unique: the Lane Venture Saranac is another customer favorite. This conversation set would be just as at home in a Scandinavian design magazine as a Tennessee backyard in summer. Split the difference and have a sophisticated outdoor get together with friends - that table is the perfect spot for a smorgasbord!
